A team of four women has been assigned to manage the historic site Port Lockroy, on Goudier Island. It is the world's most remote post office with difficult living conditions. The appointed women's job roles also include counting the island's penguins, handling letters, managing port and gift shop.
Clare Ballantyne, Mairi Hilton, Natalie Corbett, and Lucy Bruzzone will give up their home comforts to live and work in a remote part of Antarctica. They will be stationed at Goudier Island for five months.
The remote office is one of the toughest places on the earth to survive for a living being. Homely comforts like running water or a flushing toilet are not available. Also, having to bear sub-zero temperatures and constant daylight.
All Women Team To Work In Antarctica
All women will share the island with a colony of gentoo penguins. Individual tasks are allotted all the women in the team.
Mairi Hilton is suppose to monitor penguins. Mairi Hilton is a conservation biologist. Hilton pointed out in a report that it is her first time in Antarctica and way excited to set eyes on the white continent. Also, she is prepared for unexpected things that will come across her on the Island. Further Hilton added, "I can't wait to see the penguins and other wildlife like seabirds and whales."
Scientist Lucy Bruzzone will be the base leader, managing the team and co-ordinating all ship visits to the island. Bruzzone has a record of spending three months in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard on an Arctic expedition. According to her, this new adventure was her "lifelong dream".
Clare Ballantyne is assigned a postmaster role at the port. An earth science postgraduate from Oxford University will deal with approximately 80,000 cards that are mailed each year from the site to more than 100 countries. Ballantyne stated that she is all set to step on Goudier Island and take in the cacophony and pungent smell of the penguins, the backdrop of the glaciers and Fief mountains.
Newlywed Natalie Corbett is in charge of running the gift shop. She calls her short adventure a solo honeymoon. Vicky Inglis will accompany four women to help settle them in for the first 10 weeks. Vicky Inglis earlier stayed in Antarctica for five months, and know the place to the best of his knowledge.
All four were selected among 6,000 applicants who expressed an interest in the roles. UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) charity advertised work responsibility. All women-group will now travel 9,000 miles to reopen the bay for the first time since the pandemic. They will take care of the charity's flagship site, which is also the world's most remote museum.
Port Lockroy, Goudier Island, Antarctica holds historic importance as a lot many scientific works was performed there, including the first measurements of the ionosphere, and the first recording of an atmospheric whistler (electronic waves), from Antarctica. The Britisher operate as a British research station until January 16, 1962. British military Operation Tabarin established the Port on tiny Goudier Island in the bay, during World War I.
