'Dream For Yourself & Go Get It': Daisy Tanwani’s Advice For Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Daisy Tanwani, whose globally recognised brand collaborates with over 1,000 artisans and operates in 32 countries, shared her valuable insights on how artisans, particularly women, are transforming the entrepreneurial landscape.

Speaking about the shift in the artisan ecosystem, Tanwani remarked, “I think if you just rewind 20 or even 10 years back, they were more like makers, manufacturers. But now, grassroots craftsmen have very much been included in the modern brandscape, the narrative. They are part of the story. The brand makers, the marketers, all understand that you cannot leave them out. They are not just makers, but they are literally the lifeline of any crafts-run business.”

The conversation also touched upon the stereotypes often associated with women entrepreneurs, such as the assumption that women are less ambitious or more emotional in business. Addressing this, Tanwani firmly rejected such biases, “A lot of times, it’s thought that women are not that ambitious, but I think that is a very, very wrong notion. I know of businesses that have become like 1000 crores, 2000 crores run by women. Countries are run by women. So how can women be stereotyped as not being ambitious or not being in love with numbers?”

She emphasised the multifaceted value women bring to the table, “Wherever there is a woman, there is value creation beyond money. There is empathy; there is kindness. So I think when you get a woman entrepreneur in, on the contrary, I would say you do get the ambition, and you get plus plus.”

When asked about the women who have influenced or inspired her professionally, Tanwani reflected on the values instilled by the women in her life. She explained, “I don’t think that there are women who are inspiring me professionally or personally. Some women are inspiring a value system, a value system to adapt, a value system to create, to innovate, to stand up for yourself, to have a spine, to dream for yourself, and to go get it.”

She continued, “There have been so many women in and around me, not necessarily women who are related to me but also friends, family, people I haven’t met but I have seen their stories. It starts of course with my mother who taught me to dream big and do everything in my mind to pursue it.”
