She is currently the party MLA for the Kuthuparamba constituency, where CPM has commanded a strong footing since 1970. This assembly election, the Kuthuparamba seat has been allotted to the Left-Front ally Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD) as per the CPM's seat-sharing design.
The Mattannur seat is currently held by CPM's EP Jayarajan.

On Monday, after Lathika Subash resigned as Kerala Mahila Congress chief for low female representation in the election by her party and tonsured her head in protest, KK Shailaja spoke in defence of her. "Although both Lathika and I are at politically opposite ends, we do stand together when it comes to issues of common rights of women. The Congress did not give many seats to women. Last time they had no women in the assembly... As activists of the women's movement, we want equal representation."
The Kerala polls will be held on April 6 with results on May 2.
