The Bharatiya Janata Party announced the first list of candidates for the West Bengal assembly polls on Saturday. The party has pitted Bharati Ghosh, an ex-IPS officer, against another former IPS officer Humayun Kabir from Trinamool Congress in the Debra constituency.

The constituency, which is 103 km from Kolkata, will witness a fierce contest between two former Indian Police service officers.

Here's everything you need to know about the ex-IPS officer turned potential Member of Legislative Assembly in West Bengal:

  1. Bharati Ghosh was born and raised in Kolkata, West Bengal.
  2. She has done her bachelors and masters degrees from Jadavpur University.
  3. Moreover, she also holds an LL.B degree from Burdwan University, West Bengal. While serving as an IPS officer, she got a diploma from the prestigious Harvard University, USA.
  4. She has also reportedly worked in the United Nations for a few years.
  5. Bharati initially worked for the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police.
  6. By all accounts, she was known to be an efficient IPS officer and is often credited for making Midnapore free from the Naxalite terrorism.
  7. She was earlier the police chief of Jhargram district. She remained in IPS service from 1994 till 2017.
  8. The former IPS officer was close to the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In fact, a public event, she referred to the her as 'Maa' (mother) in a public meeting.
  9. Bharati joined BJP in 2019 and contested the 2019 elections from Ghatal constituency. While campaigning, she was accused by TMC of using foul means to garner votes. Moreover, she was detained by police after they seized cash worth 1.13 lakhs from her car.
  10. She and her husband MV Raju, were accused of extortion, power abuse cheating in 2018. The latter was also arrested by the police.
