Elder Abuse

Women between the ages of 60 and 90 were surveyed in May and June for research titled "Women & Ageing: Invisible or Empowered?" which was published by HelpAge India on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The survey found that 16 percent of elderly women said they had been abused. 50 percent of them stated they had experienced physical abuse, 46 percent verbal abuse, and 40 percent emotional abuse.

The survey also revealed that 56 percent of elder women were unaware of abuse redressal mechanisms and that most women don't report the abuse they face out of fear. 18 percent of the women stated that they feared further violence if they spoke about against the abuse they faced.
