In April, a TikTok creator mused, "Did I just write the song of the summer?" Girl on Couch's "Looking for a Man in finance" song spawned hundreds of remixes and won her a record deal.
“I’m looking for a man in finance,” the TikTok user, @girl_on_couch, says blandly, looking around the room and then into the camera. “Trust fund. 6'5. Blue eyes. Finance.” In the caption, she urges someone to turn her sound bite into “an actual song plz”.
From this little bit of spoken audio sprang the song that’s suddenly everywhere on social media: I’m looking for a man in finance.
Since it was posted, several DJs, including David Guetta, have reached out to Megan to make the trend into a real song. It has also been made into spin-offs by countless content creators and TikTok and Instagram users. Charlie Hedges from BBC Radio 1 remixed it for her Dance Anthems show. Even artist and producer Malibu Barbie gave it a go.
The song rapidly became a viral trend perhaps because of its catchy tune or maybe because of the fact that more than 39,000 TikToks have been made with the sound, including brands using it to advertise, such as the fast-casual chain Just Salad. Whatever it may be, the earworm has rightly been dubbed the "song of the summer".
On TikTok and Instagram, users are making their versions of the song, dancing to it around lounge rooms, in dance festivals, or muttering adaptations of it as they work or multitask.
Recreation by Bengaluru woman
The trend has reached all parts of the world, including India. Instagram user Neha put her own twist on the trend by playing on the challenge of finding an ideal apartment in Bangalore that fits into the budget while meeting the person's requirements.
She recreated the trend by changing the lyrics to, she is looking for a flat in Bengaluru, furnished, two rooms, and a balcony, whilst the 'man in finance' audio played in the background.
She captioned her post, ''Desperate times call for desperate measures. So here's my take on the trend."
Here's the video:
“This is tougher than finding “Finance, trust fund, 6’5, blue eyes” one user said in comments, sarcastically taking a dig at the process of finding a place in Bengaluru. “Might as well buy one in Mysore its almost the same time to commute if you have one in electronic city,” one more user said.
“Bengaluru is a like a galaxy. U gotta mention which part of galaxy you looking at, prices fluctuate accordingly,” another said mentioning the importance of specifics while finding homes in Bengaluru.
