Delhi liquor shop aunty has emerged as the internet's newest obsession, following the announcement of a six-day curfew in the national capital. As Delhiites rushed to stock up on a week's worth of essentials ahead of the lockdown beginning tonight, liquor shops in the city saw long queues, as they did prior to last year's lockdown too.
Also standing in one of those male-dominated queues was a woman, who is now going viral as the Delhi liquor shop aunty for her unique take on the pandemic situation. "Injection fayda nahi karega, ye alcohol fayda karegi...Mujhe dawaion se asar nahi hoga, peg se asar hoga," she proclaims in a video originally shared by ANI.
It translates to: "The vaccine won't make things better, alcohol will. Medicine won't benefit me, a 'peg' will."
Though many are taking amusement in her joy-ridden statements, there are simultaneous warnings to not heed her advice, which, some feel, could create bad press for the COVID-19 vaccines.

Delhi Liquor Shop Aunty Sparks A Memefest Ahead Of Lockdown
The woman goes on to mention she is of the belief that the need of the hour is to open more thekas (liquor shops) over hospitals. "I have been drinking for 35 years and have never needed to take any medicine. People who drink are all safe from the virus," she #WATCH Delhi: A woman, who has come to purchase liquor, at a shop in Shivpuri Geeta Colony, says, "...Injection fayda nahi karega, ye alcohol fayda karegi...Mujhe dawaion se asar nahi hoga, peg se asar hoga..." pic.twitter.com/iat5N9vdFZ
Delhi recently lowered its legal drinking age from 25 to 21. More on that here.
From resonance to humour, everyone on Twitter seems to have found a light moment in their new favourite 'aunty's video. While some memes cheer her on for her happy-go-lucky demeanour, others claim 'aunty's words could do potential damage. We rounded up some reactions for you:

A Review Of The COVID-19 Situation In Delhi
Delhi, alongside Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, is leading the rise in the national COVID-19 tally vis-a-vis daily cases. As of April 19 at 8:00 am, the national capital recorded over 25,000 fresh cases, its single biggest jump, taking the national count of active cases to 19,29,329. As the positivity rate also touches 30 percent, number of samples tested was at 13,56,133 in Delhi on April 18.
India, which is currently running a vaccination drive of Covaxin and Covishield, has completely inoculated 12,26,22,590 people. Meanwhile, Russia's Sputnik V has been approved for emergency use and the centre has sought the use of other foreign-made vaccines. Here's how the three approved vaccines are different.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, addressing citizens ahead of the lockdown on April 19, said that the capital's healthcare system was facing a brunt, with a paucity of oxygen facilities, Remdesivir injections and hospital beds. Full story here.
