Speaking to SheThePeople, Tanvi Karekar shared her journey from nursery rhyme performances to Bharatanatyam classes during her school years. Dancing soon evolved from a hobby to a passion, fueling her desire to turn it into a career.

Here's Tanvi Karekar's story in her own words

I was born in Thane, Mumbai, and have been brought up in the same place since childhood. Dancing became my hobby at the young age of 4, beginning with performances based on nursery rhymes choreographed by my mother. This brought to light my parents' passion, and they put me in Bharatanatyam dance classes while I was receiving my formal school education. After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce, I realised that I needed to work on my passion for dancing and bring it forward as a career.

Initially, I struggled to convince my family to make it a full-time career, but sooner or later they realised my potential and started supporting me. It was in 2016 when I posted my first video on YouTube. It got really good reviews and gave me the confidence that was needed. Then I began as a content creator and gained professional knowledge about dance and the science behind it.

I was body-shamed a couple of times by the viewers and even my guru at one point in time, which hit me low. But then I looked at other artists for inspiration and worked a day in and out to bring perfection and grace to my art. In 2023, my mother really wanted to try out a dance choreography that was going viral at the time. I taught her the choreography, and we uploaded the video to Instagram. She had always been a confident person, so it went very smoothly for her to be in front of the camera after certain retakes. The reel came out and blew up the internet. We had 3 million views, and the audience was making videos, taking it as inspiration.

My mother has been my support system forever. I would request that the audience keep spreading positivity and smiles on social media through content creation.
