Meet Talisha and Ajmal, an Instagram content creator couple whose love story is a modern-day tale of overcoming obstacles and bridging cultural divides. In today's fast-paced world, navigating relationships can be challenging, with societal norms and family expectations often looming large.
Speaking to SheThePeople, Talisha and Ajmal shared how their journey stands as a testament to the power of love and determination, proving that true connection knows no boundaries.
Here's Talisha and Ajmal's story in their own words
At 21, I was preparing for the 12-day trek to the Everest base camp. Ajmal saw me at the gym where I used to work out and immediately asked my friend about me. Initially, he thought that I was too young, and hence he didn’t want to take the initiative. But later, when he realised that I was 21, he reached out to me on Instagram.
When I went for my trek, that is when Ajmal proposed to me over a phone call. He told me that he was serious about this relationship and wanted to take it forward. I was very happy, and I knew that he was the one for me. I come from a very open-minded family, and I was not sure if my dad would be okay with the fact that he is from another religion. After I came back and informed my family about the situation, they were concerned.
Dad was very upset about my decision. He had his insecurities, and he was unsure if things would work out between Ajmal and me. Both my parents thought this would bring shame to both our families. Later, when I moved in with my boyfriend, I didn’t tell my dad about it for a year. My mom knew about it. We were trying to get to know each other better. Eventually, both of us got promoted to our respective jobs. My parents were happy with my attitude towards my career, and that’s when I asked them to meet Ajmal and his family.
Although Dad agreed at first, when we had them over, he refused to even talk to them. It turned out that some relatives had put doubts in my dad's mind. Moreover, he watched a movie and thought that I might be forced to change my religion. Ajmal and I continued to stand by each other. We were determined to prove that our love could overcome any cultural or religious differences. Over time, we worked hard to build a strong and trusting relationship, supporting each other through the highs and lows of life. On New Year’s Eve, I and Ajmal decided to celebrate New Year’s with my parents in Goa.
We were not sure if this would be a good idea, but we wanted to bridge the gap between us and our families. My parents were very happy to see me after so long. As my parents saw my equation with Ajmal, they recognised the depth of our commitment to each other.
Today, Dad trusts Ajmal and calls him his son!
