A recent viral video features an NMIMS College student in Mumbai who chose an unconventional and fun-filled approach to accept his degree, resulting in unexpected consequences.

Student Dances His Way to Degree

A user named Arya Kothari shared an Instagram reel capturing a memorable moment. In the video, Kothari eagerly awaits his turn on stage to receive his degree from the attending guests and professors. When his moment arrives, he breaks into dance to the tune of Salman Khan's Tenu Leke from Salaam-E-Ishq. However, his enthusiastic display is met with disapproval from one of the dignitaries, who declines to hand him the degree. Another woman chastises him, emphasising the formal nature of the event.

Kothari promptly apologises on stage, and fortunately, he receives his degree along with a cautionary note about his conduct. The video swiftly gained viral status, garnering more than 6 million views on Instagram. While some commenters added their humorous takes, others shared contrasting opinions as well, with some disapproving of his actions. A critical comment read, "Such behaviour is deeply disrespectful on various levels." Another individual noted, "The Gen Z mindset often perceives their actions as cool, but there are occasions where proper behaviour is essential."

Netizens question the thin line between being cool and crossing a boundary

Such incidents are not uncommon, as there have been previous cases where students have faced repercussions for disregarding the formality of important occasions. An example includes a 17-year-old graduate from The Philadelphia High School for Girls who had her diploma withheld for opting to dance during the diploma presentation.

While acknowledging the unique and creative approaches of Gen Z may seem cool, it's important to recognise the significance of adhering to etiquette. In the recent situation, embracing proper college decorum is also a form of coolness, and understanding and respecting such norms contribute to a well-rounded experience.

The etiquette that we learn in school and college, the art of shaking hands, the courteous exchange of pleasantries, and the practice of active listening, are not mere rituals but building blocks of interpersonal skills. In an era where the line between the virtual and real worlds is increasingly blurred, everything and every situation is seen as content, whether for reels or shorts. Acting cool or being cool is all good, but acting gracefully and showing respect are more impressive qualities.

It's not about conforming to rigid rules but about fostering an environment where everyone feels respected and valued. It's about acknowledging that while new trends and innovations are exciting, the foundation of courtesy and respect is timeless.

So, to Gen Z, the torchbearers of innovation and change, let's remember that alongside your ingenious ideas and unconventional coolness, there's a thing called etiquette, a subtle yet impactful way of making your mark in the world.
