Breast cancer is a serious health condition that affects many women worldwide. It is a type of cancer that originates in the breast tissue but can be classified into different stages based on the extent of the disease.

Dr Tanaya Narendra explains an easy way to check for cancerous lumps at home. Self-examination involves two parts: looking and feeling. Here’s a detailed guide on how to perform this essential health check.

Step 1: Looking

  1. Stand in front of a mirror: Begin by undressing to the waist and standing in front of a large mirror.
  2. Observe your breasts: Look for any changes in size, shape, or symmetry. Pay attention to the skin and note any dimpling, puckering, or changes in texture.
  3. Check the nipples: Observe if there is any discharge, inversion, or unusual change in appearance.
  4. Arm positions: Raise your arms above your head and look for any visible changes. Next, place your hands on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Look for any asymmetry or unusual changes.

Step 2: Feeling

  1. Lie down: Lying down spreads the breast tissue evenly over the chest wall, making it easier to feel all the tissue.
  2. Use the opposite hand: Use your left hand to examine your right breast and your right hand to examine your left breast.
  3. Use the pads of your fingers: Use the pads of your three middle fingers to check your breast. Move in small circular motions.
  4. Follow a pattern: Choose a pattern to ensure you cover the entire breast. You can use a circular motion starting at the nipple and moving outwards, vertical lines from the collarbone to the top of the abdomen, or a wedge pattern from the outer breast toward the nipple.
  5. Check the armpit area: Remember to feel the area above and below your collarbone and your armpit area where breast tissue is also present.
  6. Pressure levels: Apply light, medium, and firm pressure to feel the different layers of tissue.

Additional Tips

  • Frequency: Perform this self-exam once a month, preferably a few days after your menstrual period ends when breasts are less likely to be swollen or tender.
  • Record changes: Keep a journal of your findings to track any changes over time. This can be useful information for your healthcare provider.
  • Consult a doctor: If you notice any unusual changes, lumps, or persistent pain, consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

Importance of Self-Examination

Self-examination is a crucial method for early detection of breast cancer. While it does not replace regular mammograms and professional examinations, it helps you become familiar with your breasts so you can notice any changes early.

Final Thoughts

Remember, both men and women can develop breast cancer, though it is more common in women. Encourage your loved ones to perform regular self-exams and seek medical advice if they detect any abnormalities. Early detection saves lives. Stay informed, stay proactive, and prioritise your health.
