Embracing Girly Vibes In A World That Deems Them Uncool

I like wearing pinks, enjoy doing makeup and dressing up, and love reading romance novels, especially by Colleen Hoover.  I don’t have much interest in technology or sports, and I am also quite emotional and sensitive. I am that girl who used to take up the role of a mother or a wife while playing ghar-ghar in my childhood days. And you know what society calls someone with all these characteristics? “A Girly Girl” However, I am not ashamed of being one. But the problem lies in the mentality behind this stereotype. And our very own Bollywood plays a crucial role in creating such a stereotypical mindset in society. 

Embracing Girly Vibes in a Not-So-Cool World

Remember Deepika Padukone as Naina and Evelyn as Lara in Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani? Naina being tomboyish is shown as someone who’s intelligent and mature, while Lara being stereotypically feminine  is shown as someone with zero intellect and emotional intelligence. 

If you are not a typical girly girl, you hate pinks, love technology, and love sports, then you might have heard men say, “Oh, you are so cool. You are not like other girls.” Or maybe “you are a beauty with brains.” 

I mean, WOW. If I look pretty and dress well, then of course I can’t be smart and intelligent. There are so many girls out there who wear this “I am not a girly girl” badge, thinking it’s cool to put up a tough front just to get validation and approval from society. Is it that difficult to understand that every human being is a mixture of masculine and feminine traits, whether by nature or nurture? And there’s nothing feminine about pink or masculine about blacks or blues.

I am a girl; whether I like pinks or blacks, whether I wear heels or sneakers, whether I listen to Taylor Swift or Coldplay, whether I am emotional or strong-headed, I WILL REMAIN A GIRL, and nothing can change that fact. There could be one girl who’s into high heels, makeup, and dresses, while another could be into sports, jeans, and sneakers. And it is absolutely normal to be one of them. 

Do you think Michelle Obama cares about how men perceive her, whether she's in heels or sneakers? 

Or do you think Sushmita Sen ever gave heed to people calling her too manly or bossy just because she is a tough & strong-headed woman? 

No, they don’t. They are too busy doing their own things to care about silly judgment from others.

It’s high time that we free ourselves from the social pressure of being a certain way and live our lives however we wish because people are always going to judge. 

They like to put others in neat little boxes. But we are unique and complex beings. We are who we are, and no one can change that.
