Who Was Anita Pointer? Grammy Winner Singer Dies At 74

The Grammy-winning singer Anita Pointer who was one of the founding members of the R&B group “The Pointer Sisters” died on Saturday, at the age of 74 after losing her battle with cancer.

The late singer's publicist Roger Neal announced that Anita Pointer passed away. He wrote in an Instagram post, "“Sad to report my client Grammy Winner Anita Pointer of the Pointer Sisters has passed away after a heroic battle with cancer."

The Grammy winner died on New Year’s Eve at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by her family. “While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Anita, we are comforted in knowing she is now with her daughter, Jada and her sisters June & Bonnie and at peace," her family has said in a statement.

Who Was Anita Pointer?

  • Anita Marie Pointer was an American singer-songwriter, who was born on January 23, 1948, in Oakland, California, United States.
  • Along with her younger sisters June, Bonnie and Ruth, started the pop singing group The Pointer Sisters in 1969. Their first musical album was Fairytale which won a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance.
  • After winning Grammy, the Pointer Sisters became the first black female group to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and the first contemporary act to perform at the San Francisco Opera House.
  • After Bonnie left the group in 1978 it almost got disbanded. But the group continued with Anita, June and Ruth who then reached stratospheric commercial success in the 1980s.
  • The group won three Grammy Awards for their albums and had 13 United States top 20 hit songs between the years 1973 and 1985. Their album “Break out” went triple platinum and garnered two American Music Awards.
  • The Pointer Sisters gained a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994.
  • In 1987 Anita released her first solo album named, “Love for What It Is”, which got the single Overnight Success.
  • Anita Pointer retired from performing in the year 2015. Ruth Pointer is now the only surviving member of the Pointer Sisters, as June died in 2006, Bonnie in 2020, and Anita recently passed.
