TikTok might have been banned in India, but trending videos seem to find their way to the country via various other social media platforms. One such video is that of “Tube Girl.” Meet 22-year-old Sabrina Bahsoon, aka "Tube Girl" who began posting videos of herself energetically dancing inside the London underground train. She has now emerged as one of the biggest TikTok stars of 2023. While most people spend their time commuting on public transport by listening to music, reading books, solving puzzles, or watching series, one woman came up with a unique way to pass the time while travelling by metro. She posted a video of the same pioneering trend on TikTok.
The young woman began posting videos of herself energetically dancing inside the London underground trains. Soon, the videos went viral on social media, earning her the tag “Tube Girl.”
How Did The "Tube Girl" Happen?
Bahsoon told the Daily Mail that it all started with a “no.” She had asked a friend to film the video for her, but he refused to capture something so complicated, so she decided to do it on her own.
Then she began practising her moves at home on the bus and finally gained the confidence to record a video of herself dancing on the London underground, as per the news portal.
Eventually, Bahsoon posted her first video dancing on the London Underground in August 2023 on TikTok. The video showed her dancing and lip-syncing to the 2011 super hit song, “Where Dem Girls.”
Three days ago, she shared a video of herself dancing and lip-syncing inside the tube on Instagram. The caption read, “Better than rotting in my bed.” A text overlay on the video said, “When you were gonna stay in but remembered you’ll never be this young and hot again.”
In another video, Bahsoon lip-synced to a song while getting down an escalator. “Have you heard? I’m the Tube Girl! Credit to @trendformusic on TikTok for this audio version,” read the caption. The text overlay said that she was on her way to work.
Many netizens reacted to her viral videos. One user expressed how this was a perfect demonstration of how to do “Carefree with Confidence.” Another user said they believe in Tube Girl supremacy.
Who is Sabrina Bahsoon?
22-year-old Sabrina Bahsoon was raised in Malaysia and moved to London to graduate in law from Durham University. After rising to fame, she made her debut at MAC Cosmetics’ London Fashion Show and is now slated to grace the runway at Paris Fashion Week.
Speaking about her newfound fame, she told the Daily Mail, “Even just making it in the UK was a huge thing. Then for it to take over the world, I’m still processing it.”
What Is This Trend All About?
Inspired by her, several women are now embracing their self-confidence by dancing freely on subways, trains, and buses. This trend is all about turning mundane public transport commutes into something interesting and fun and encouraging women to “dance like nobody’s watching.”
Psychologist Opinion On The Trend
However, speaking to ABC News, psychologist Dr Sarah Ashton said, “Public transport is a space where social norms and behaviours are often adhered to, so to see Tube Girl breaking out of those norms is unique.”
She also empathised that it’s really important that people normalise that if they don’t feel like they could do what Tube Girl is doing, it doesn’t mean they are not confident. It just means that they are sensitive to the world around them, and maybe they are going to find another way to feel confident, that is right for them.
