Mint Butterfield, 16-year-old daughter of Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield and Flikr co-founder Caterina Fake, who went missing from her home in Bolinas, California has been found. The police found the teenager in San Francisco on Saturday night, accompanied by Christopher “Kio” Dizefalo, a 26-year-old man who identified himself as her “adult friend.” The man is now facing kidnapping charges and under arrest. He was booked at the Marin County Jail and held on $50,000 bail
The infamous Tenderloin District of San Francisco is where Mint and Dizefalo were discovered parked in a white van, according to reports from the Marin County Sheriff's Office. The region is regarded as dangerous, particularly for children, and is notorious for its high crime rate. Even though Mint was discovered unharmed, concerns were expressed concerning both her well-being and the nature of her relationship with Dizefalo.
Grateful to the Volunteers, said Mint's Mother
After learning of their child's safe return, Mint's mother, Caterina Fake, and father, Stewart Butterfield, co-founder of Slack, expressed relief and appreciation. They expressed their gratitude to volunteers, law police, and community members who helped with the search in a message to the media.
In an email sent to several press outlets, Mint’s parents thanked police for bringing the child home safely.
“A heartfelt thanks to all the family, friends, volunteers, and strangers who called in tips and made this recovery possible,” the family’s email says. “We especially want to thank the seasoned law enforcement officers who understand the very real threat of predators who use the allure of drugs to groom teenagers.”
As per the previous press release issued by the Marin County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, April 25, Mint was described as a “voluntary missing person.”
Mint's discovery in San Francisco sparked inquiries about her whereabouts and the circumstances behind their disappearance. There were worries for her safety and well-being after it was claimed that she had left a note signaling her desire to flee.
Adam Schermerhorn, a spokesman for the Marin County Sheriff's Office, released a statement to Business Insider stating that Dizefalo was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping a child, having sex without permission, and contributing to a minor's delinquency. The Standard was informed by Schermerhorn that, contrary to what some individuals were claiming happened, he did not believe there was "foul play related to kidnapping or anything else."
