Sophie Turner has taken legal action against Joe Jonas, claiming that he had possession of their children's passports. The couple initiated divorce proceedings on September 5, marking the end of their four-year marriage.
Singer Joe Jonas has responded to allegations made by his estranged wife, actor Sophie Turner. She filed a lawsuit against him, claiming he refused to return their daughters to England, her home country. Joe Jonas' representative released a statement via People.com in response to the lawsuit.
Joe Jonas's Statement via People
According to the lawsuit, Sophie Turner accused Joe of holding their children's passports. The couple shares two children: a three-year-old named Willa and another daughter who is 14 months old. The statement shared by People explained the situation.
It stated that Jonas initiated divorce proceedings in Florida, as it was the appropriate jurisdiction for the case, following multiple conversations with Turner. It claimed that Turner was aware of Jonas's intention to file for divorce, and the Florida Court had already issued an order restricting both parents from relocating the children. Tuner received this order on September 6, 2023, over two weeks ago.
The statement continued, indicating that Joe and Sophie had a cordial meeting in New York, where Tuner came to be with the kids. After the meeting, the children remained with her, and Jonas believed they had reached an understanding regarding an amicable co-parenting arrangement.
However, less than 24 hours after agreeing to an "amicable co-parenting setup," Tuner expressed her desire to permanently take the children to the UK. She subsequently demanded Jonas hand over the children's passports to facilitate their immediate departure from the country, which would have violated the Florida Court order.
Joe Responds To Sophie's Allegation Of Withholding Kids' Passports
Jonas' stance was to seek shared parenting with both parents involved in raising the children, allowing for their upbringing in both the US and the UK. It was noted that the children had spent most of their lives in the US. The statement clarified that the situation was a legal disagreement arising from the ending of their marriage.
Regarding the use of terms like "abduction," the statement deemed it misleading and potentially an abuse of the legal system. It emphasised that the children were not abducted. The statement also pointed out that after being in Joe's care for three months, the children were currently with their mother.
Turner's claim was seen as an attempt to shift the divorce proceedings to the UK and permanently remove the children from the US. Jonas had already distanced himself from disparaging statements attributed to him and wished for Sophie to reconsider her legal position and proceed in a more constructive and private manner. His primary concern remained the well-being of his children.
Sophie and Joe filed for divorce on September 5, after four years of marriage.
