In September, when actor-comedian Vir Das was told he was going to make history as the first Indian to host the International Emmy Awards 2024, he knew his look had to make a statement. What followed was the hunt for a bold yet classy fashion designer who could curate an outfit that could scream personality, culture, and style, all in one. Following weeks of meticulous research and collaboration, Delhi-based couturier Shubhangi Bajpai emerged as the unarguable winner.
Who Is Shubhangi Bajpai?
Shubhangi, the founder of Salooka, tailored a bandhgala chikankari white shirt layered with a can't-go-wrong blazer, pleated 'lungi-inspired' pants, and a unique cummerbund with a button closure in the front. The look, styled by Shreeja Rajgopal, balanced Western and Indian elements with perfection.
The attire was complete with a striking green pendant by jewellery designer Hanut Singh, which was supposed to represent the green tie that Vir Das had at Delhi Public School. With this, the actor-comedian's look for the milestone event became a celebration of his beginnings and cultural roots.
On his Instagram, Vir Das said that he hoped to not only make an impact with his attire but also support emerging designers in India. He took to social media to scout for the perfect talent. His search was met with thousands of applications from couturiers nationwide before Shubhangi was chosen.
"We had like 4000 people submit. I wanna thank you for sending your stuff. We picked this kid from Delhi," he said, introducing the Salooka designer in a social media post. "I know nothing about fashion but she does and she worked super hard. Happy to show you her work soon," he said.
Speaking to News18, Shubhangi shared the journey of making the attire. "In a week’s time, my team of a karigar, a masterji and I worked together to get the right fits after some ten test fits. From drafting the patterns on paper to final finishes and embellishments, many hands were involved across Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Jaipur."
Shubhangi, a native of Lucknow, is a graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology. She included elements of her roots, like Chikankari work, in her design. She thanked Vir Das for supporting young artists in India and giving her the opportunity to present her skills on the global platform.
