Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's eldest daughter, Zahara, made headlines in November 2023 by joining the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Spelman College, a prestigious historically Black women’s liberal arts institution in Atlanta. During her induction, Zahara proudly introduced herself as "Zahara Marley Jolie", a moment which was captured in a video by Essence.
Viral Video Of Zahara Removing ‘Pitt’ From Name
The video has resurfaced and went viral in 2024, coinciding with Angelina Jolie's legal disputes involving the United States Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which are connected to her ongoing issues with ex-husband Brad Pitt.
During the sorority's induction ceremony, Zahara, then a sophomore, captivated the audience with her grand introduction. As part of the tradition, she proudly declared her name, emphasising her connection to her mother. In a notable move, Zahara omitted “Pitt” from her introduction, stating, “My name is Zahara Marley Jolie, coming all the way from the Golden State in the city full of angels, Los Angeles, California.” This moment drew significant attention, especially given the ongoing drama surrounding the Jolie-Pitt family.
Jolie-Pitt To Just Jolie: Have The Sisters Chosen To Drop Their Father's Surname?
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt share six children, Maddox (22), Zahara (19), Shiloh (18), Pax (20), and twins Knox and Vivienne (15). Zahara's choice to drop her father's surname was soon followed by Shiloh's decision to change her name as well.
According to NBC News, the second daughter, Shiloh filed a petition on her 18th birthday, May, 2024, to remove "Pitt" from her surname, and a judge has now approved her request, allowing her to go by Shiloh Jolie.
Additionally, Vivienne, the third daughter, co-produced the musical The Outsiders alongside her mother. In the Playbill, she is listed as "Vivienne Jolie" rather than "Vivienne Jolie-Pitt." However, PEOPLE reported that it's unclear whether Vivienne has legally changed her name as well.
The change comes amid ongoing legal battles between Jolie and Pitt, who have been in a contentious court fight since their separation in 2016. Although their divorce has not been finalised, a 2019 court ruling granted them both legal single status.
These name changes come amid long-standing reports of strained relationships between Brad Pitt and his children following Angelina Jolie's 2016 divorce filing, where she sought sole physical custody of their kids.
