Oscars 2024: First Time Ever, 3 Films From Female Directors In Race

The 96th Academy Awards nominations have been unveiled, with Oppenheimer leading with 13 nods, followed by Poor Things with 11, Killers of the Flower Moon with 10, and Barbie with eight. Notably, this is the first time in the Academy Awards' 96-year history that three films by women directors-- Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Celine Song’s Past Lives-- have made the cut for Best Picture. Meanwhile, Justine Triet is the only woman who has been nominated for Best Director.

The 96th Academy Awards Nominations

The Best Picture category includes nominees such as American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest.

In the acting categories, notable nominees include Annette Bening, Lily Gladstone, Sandra Hüller, Carey Mulligan, and Emma Stone for Best Actress. Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Wright, and Cillian Murphy are nominated for Best Actor. 

Sterling K. Brown, Robert De Niro, Robert Downey Jr., Ryan Gosling, and Mark Ruffalo are competing for supporting actor, while Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks, America Ferrera, Jodie Foster, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph are vying for supporting actress.

The Best Director category includes Justine Triet, the sole female director, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, and Jonathan Glazer. 

Animated Film nominees are The Boy and the Heron, Elemental, Nimona, Robot Dreams, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. In the documentary feature category, films such as Four Daughters, 20 Days in Mariupol, Bobi Wine: The People’s President, The Eternal Memory, and To Kill a Tiger are competing. The international feature film category includes entries like Society of the Snow, The Zone of Interest, The Teachers’ Lounge, Io Capitano, and Perfect Days.

Other categories included Costume Design, Original Score, Original Song, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Film Editing, Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Cinematography, Visual Effects, Sound, and Documentary Short Film.
