We're on episode 2 of the GOP primary debate saga in the US election cycle for 2024- and it's mostly the same as episode 1. In recent news, the second US Republican presidential primary debate on September 27 was a mess- plagued by interruptions, crosstalk, and squabbles, most notably former governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley firing back at fellow presidential prospective Vivek Ramaswamy.
When Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur with Indian heritage, was responding to a question about TikTok, Haley chimed in, stating, "Every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber from what you say," according to CNN.
Haley Vs. Ramaswamy Pt. 1
In the first GOP primary debate, with the absence of Donald Trump, both Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy emerged as leading potential candidates for the Republican ticket for the US presidential election of 2024. The daughter of two Sikh-Indian immigrants, Nikki Haley is the former governor of South Carolina and a United Nations ambassador. Vivek Ramaswamy's parents migrated to the US from Kerala, and Ramaswamy himself is the former chairman of his company Strive Asset Management.
One would probably think that sharing Indian heritage would bring these two candidates closer politically. However, both candidates have been against each other from the start, with their differences in foreign and domestic policy becoming a matter of contention between the pair during the first Republican primary.
Second GOP Debate
The second GOP debate wasn't much better in terms of conducting a clean debate- all the candidates were involved in crosstalk, and petty squabbles, according to CNN. Additionally, due to how Ramaswamy stood out during the first debate, many of his rivals tried to attack him, in an attempt to question his credibility during the debate.
In particular, when asked about his use of TikTok, Nikki Haley interrupted Ramaswamy, stating that "every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber from what you say," according to CNN. Haley didn't stop there though- she debated with former vice-president Mike Pence on US healthcare as well.
While there were some notable moments in the debate, the overall disorganisation and chaos of the second GOP primary debate made former president Donald Trump's approach of avoiding appearances at debates and "taking a running-as-an-incumbent approach to the 2024 GOP Primary" look better, in a surprising turn of events, according to CNN.
