A New York City woman was choked with a belt and sexually assaulted on the side of the road at around 3 a.m. on May 1 in the Bronx. The ordeal was caught on CCTV cameras and the New York Police Department is looking for the assailant. The 45-year-old survivor is seen walking on the sidewalk at East 152nd Street and Third Avenue when the perpetrator approached from behind, took a belt out, placed it around the woman's neck, and caused her to lose consciousness. He then dragged her behind a car where she was reportedly sexually assaulted, the police said.
The video of the ordeal has been posted to social media, and caused outrage over the rampant crimes against women in New York.
New York Woman Strangled, Sexually Assaulted
The CCTV footage of the survivor being strangled and assaulted was allegedly posted online with little to no information. The police later stated that the assailant then fled on foot towards Melrose Avenue and vanished from sight in the middle of the ordeal, The Washington Post reported. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital and is said to be stable. Reportedly, the New York Police Department believes that the perpetrator and survivor knew each other. The police also believe that the man knew her daily schedule.

The incident has shaken New York City residents, with many concerned about their safety. One resident, Justo Cordero, told abc7NY, “It's sad for women, it's sad for everybody, but women take the worst part.” Another resident, Luz Hernandez, said, "At any given moment someone can come and hurt you and the police when they need to be here they're not." Reportedly, New York City has been facing a surge in crimes, especially against women.
On May 5, 2023, up to 511 rapes were reported to the NYPD, while there was a decrease of 5.1%. rise in rape in New York this year. Recently, another series of attacks on women made headlines-- several people on TikTok spoke about an assailant punching and harassing women on the streets of New York City in broad daylight. The assailant, an unsuccessful politician, was arrested in March 2024.
