Nancy Barnes Becomes Boston Globe Editor
After Brian McGrory stepped down as editor of the Boston Globe after ten years of service in the top position, the hunt for his replacement was on ever since with some big names in consideration. On Monday, the paper finally announced its new editor as Nancy Barnes, making her the leading daily's first woman editor.
CEO of Boston Globe Linda Henry made the historic announcement, calling the selection well deserved. "Nancy Barnes is known for her commitment to the field of journalism. Her leadership skills and passion for innovation made her the best choice for our paper's top job. Holding an experience of serving as editor of two diverse leading papers, Barnes also has an experience of successfully transitioning to leading digital ad audio newsrooms as well," said Henry.
Barnes, who joined National Public Radio (NPR), in 2019 served as the senior vice president for news and as the editorial director. She decided to leave the position in September his year. Before NPR, she served as executive editor of Hearst Corp.’s Houston Chronicle for five years, overseeing the media company's express news as well. Her decade-long career at Minneapolis Star Tribune proved to be great for her career trajectory where she was named executive editor in 2007.
Barens was the editor of Star Tribue in 2013 when the paper fetched the Pulitzer Prize for local news around its detailed reporting on infant deaths at several daycare facilities. In 2015, under her leadership, the paper Chronicle won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary.
Nancy Barnes will start her job as an editor on February 1.
