On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, a wave of jubilation swept through the streets of Kansas City, Missouri, as the community came together to honour the triumphant Kansas City Chiefs in the wake of their Super Bowl LVIII victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, amidst the cheers and celebrations, tragedy struck in the form of a harrowing shooting incident near Union Station, claiming the life of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a vibrant mother of two.

She succumbed to a gunshot wound to her abdomen during surgical intervention at a local hospital. This incident, which left 22 others injured, including 11 children, has extended far beyond the confines of Kansas City, sending shockwaves through the global community.

Who Was Lisa Lopez-Galvan?

Lisa Lopez-Galvan, fondly remembered by her peers as the "most wonderful, beautiful person," was more than just a victim of a heinous crime. A local DJ and the newsroom executive administrative assistant at The Star, Lopez-Galvan's vibrant presence touched the lives of many. A stalwart in the Kansas City community, she was known for bringing joy through her work as a disc jockey for community radio station KKFI and as the co-host of Tejano Tuesday, a show dedicated to Hispanic music.

Her presence extended beyond the airwaves; Lopez-Galvan was a staple at weddings, sharing in the joy of couples as they embarked on their marital journeys. In her 40s, she resided in Shawnee with her husband and two children.

Lisa Lopez-Galvan's dedication to the Hispanic music scene was evident in her role as a co-host on Tejano Tuesday. As a proud Kansas City Chiefs fan, she integrated her love for the local sports community into her work, spreading enthusiasm and positivity through the airwaves. Her brother, Beto Lopez, the president and CEO of the Guadalupe Centers, remembers the deep connections Lisa fostered within the Kansas City community.

Her untimely demise was announced through KKFI 90.1 FM, where she hosted 'Taste of Tejano.' In a heartfelt statement, the radio station confirmed her passing and extended condolences to her grieving family.

Super Bowl Parade Shooting

The incident occurred shortly after the exuberant victory parade and rally commemorating the Kansas City Chiefs' triumph over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LVIII. The assailant's gunfire not only took the life of Lisa but also inflicted injuries on her adult son, two minor cousins, and a shocking total of 22 others, including 11 children.

Bystanders, displaying remarkable courage, tackled and subdued the unidentified shooter, preventing further carnage.  As the authorities confirm the ongoing investigation into the Super Bowl parade shooting, three individuals have been taken into custody in connection with this heinous crime. 

Despite the conspicuous absence of details regarding the firearms used in the shooting, Police Chief Stacey Graves, in light of the incident's magnitude, has stated that it is not considered an act of terrorism.

Taylor Swift Donated $100,000

Singer Taylor Swift who is currently in a very publicised relationship with Kansas City's Chief's star Travis Kelce donated $100,000 to a GoFundMe account raised by the family of the deceased who was killed during the victory celebration of the Chief's at Super Bowl event.

The pop singer was among the top donors of the fundraising for Lisa Lopez-Galvan and sent two donations of $50,000 each along with the note "Sending my deepest sympathies and condolences in the wake of your devastating loss. With love, Taylor Swift."

Reportedly, at the time Swift made her two donations, the fundraiser had already reached its goal of $75,000. As of Saturday, the amount has now reached $316,077 as approximately 4100 people have made donations. The page of the fundraiser read that the fundraiser will provide "vital financial support" to the family as they will process this unthinkable tragedy.
