Why Is John Oliver's Emmys 2024 Speech Making Waves?

John Oliver fondly remembered the dog, Dave, who had been with them through milestones like his wedding and two pregnancies. However, the speech was cut off as "get-off-stage" music swelled; he humorously quipped, "Perfect choice of music," before adding, "We had to say goodbye to her. She was an amazing dog."

Despite the increasing pressure to leave the stage, Oliver playfully shouted, "Fuck you! There you go," drawing laughter from the audience. Before concluding, he extended his dedication beyond his own dog, saying, "This isn’t just for her. This is for all dogs. You are all very good girls and boys, and you all deserve a treat. Play me off now!”

John Oliver kicked off his Emmy acceptance speech by expressing gratitude to his staff, noting that while some were present, others were in Brooklyn, where they might not even be watching the ceremony but were likely having fun.

Oliver also gave a shout-out to his wife, Kate Norley, and their kids, but made a playful blunder by accidentally referring to his son Hudson as his "husband," a mistake he jokingly predicted would haunt him.
