Jill Biden is facing criticism on social media for her comment over Texas Latinos saying that they are as unique as "breakfast tacos". The comment didn't go well with netizens as they called out the United States First Lady for her offensive statement against the community. Later, she also released an apology through her spokesperson.
First Lady Jill Biden addressed the annual conference called UnidosUS, the civil rights and advocacy group in San Antonio on Monday. In her address, she commented on the Texas Latinos which came across as offensive to the community while she was praising Raul Yzaguirre, president of the UnidosUS. Yzaguirre received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest honor for a civilian from the President.
Jill Biden's infamous stereotypical comment compared the Latinos to bodegas, blossoms and breakfast tacos. The First Lady made her statement a day before President Joe Biden was to meet Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at the White House while Jill Biden was scheduled to meet with Mexico's first lady, Dr Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller de López Obrador at the Library of Congress.
Jill Biden Breakfast Tacos comment: What happened?
Jill Biden, while praising the works of Raul Yzaguirre, said, "Raul helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community, as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio, is your strength."
National Association of Hispanic Journalists responded to her speech saying, "Using breakfast tacos to try to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio demonstrates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region." The organisation further mentioned that they are not tacos and the Latino heritage comprises of various cultures and food traditions. "Do not reduce us to stereotypes," the organisation said.
