Meet Economist Jayati Ghosh, Recipient Of Galbraith Award

Born on December 9, 1955, in India, Ghosh is one of the most respected Indian economists. Her work significantly contributes to the field of economics, particularly in areas related to development economics, international trade, and globalisation.

She holds a PhD in economics from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, India, and had been a professor at JNU's Centre for Economic Studies and Planning for almost 33 years. She is currently a Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA.

In an interview with SheThePeople, Ghosh spoke extensively on women's role in economic status, and how their participation can affect India's growth.

"It's huge, women's ability to be economically independent or to have access to her own assets and income is a huge determinant of status at many levels. If not complete, there are many other things that are also required but in many cases a necessary condition. As long as a woman is economically dependent, she is forced to be subservient in other social ways," she said

Ghosh has also been associated with various other academic institutions and has contributed significantly to economic research and policy analysis. Last year, she was appointed to a high-level advisory board on ‘Effective Multilateralism’ established by the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
