Dr Love is an eminent breast surgeon, a pioneer who advocated Breast Health widely. She has been known for her groundbreaking research that evolved medical sciences. She has challenged patronized medical approaches towards women's healthcare and contributed towards the healthcare changing lives for many.
Dr Love advocated breast-conserving surgery and was the first to raise concerns about hormone replacement treatment for menopause in women. Dr Love dedicated her life to researching the causes of breast cancer and its eradication and played a pivotal role in establishing big institutes for various studies such as the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC), Revlon UCLA Breast Center and Young Survival Coalition.
As Chief Visionary Officer and founder of the Dr Susan Love Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, the establishment has contributed a lot to various significant research in medical sciences such as AI-aided ultrasound handheld devices for underserved communities giving easy access to mammography and many more.
But apart from her surgical career and contributions to medical science and mankind, Dr Love was also an ardent and unwavering advocate for Queer rights and created history. In 1993, an era where homosexuality was not even accepted, Dr Love along with her wife Dr Helen Cooksey won the case against the Supreme Court of Massachusetts becoming the first gay couple in history to be jointly adopting a baby. This milestone also staged Massachusetts to become the first state to legalise same-sex marriages.
Dr Susan Love was born in New Jersey and departed at the age of 75 years on July 2, 2023, succumbing to her battle with leukaemia in Los Angeles. Her demise is grieved all around the world while she is being honoured for her commitment to bringing change to lives even after her demise.
