TikTok is following a new trend that has made freckles fashionable as it makes one appear 'sun-kissed' in the summer. Users are posting videos of getting permanent freckles or freckle tattoos. But things went wrong when TikTokers started getting freckle tattoos at home. The DIY freckles have caused damage to some while others don't recommend anyone to practice. The doctors too have weighed in against the DIY freckles and have warned of harmful consequences.

Reportedly, the trend has amassed over 131 million views. The trend seeks its inspiration from the desire to imitate nature. TikTok users are using make-up to get the sun-kissed look but many have resorted to a permanent solution- freckle tattoos.

The licensed procedure for getting freckle tattoos

One can get freckle tattoos through safe procedures from licensed cosmetic tattoo artists in professional clinics. To make freckle tattoos, the same pigment is used as in eyebrow microblading treatments. Microblading is a procedure in which semi-permanent pigment is applied on the skin surface to enhance the eyebrows making it look denser and defined.

The process of getting these freckle tattoos is quick (done in an hour or so) and relatively less invasive and painful than the traditional tattooing method. The tattoos last between eight months to two years depending on the skin type, sun exposure and the exfoliation habit. It costs around  $200 to $500.

But DIY freckles are a big no-no

However, making these tattoos at home, especially through the stick-and-poke method is not advisable. Many TikTok users have tried it which is alarming. However, their experience was not good and they have issued warnings against DIY freckles.

One of the TikTok users once said, “I’ve been depressed, and I like my summer freckles, so I’ve decided I’m going to tattoo them.” But later after undergoing the process, she posted, "This whole thing probably isn’t a good idea, so I probably wouldn’t recommend it.”

Another user shared about her "biggest mistake" after home tattooing led to bad consequences. Whitfield advised against the trend: “This is to anyone thinking of getting freckles tattooed onto their face: Don’t.” She recounted buying ink from eBay and using subpar sewing needles for the procedure. But it caused her infection, temporary blindness and scarring leading to a hospital bill of  $10,000

Doctors weigh in on getting permanent freckles

Several medical professionals have advised against the trend. Dr. Anthony Youn, a plastic surgeon, talked about the medical implications of freckles which are not very fashionable. He said that freckles are indicators of sun exposure and sun damage. Dr Shah also warned against the trend and said that permanent freckles can be dangerous and lead to scarring.

However, if one wants permanent freckles, doctors advise that they should get done through professional help. The environment should be controlled and the equipment sterile.

What do you think about the trend?
