5 Key Details
1. The Guardian disclosed that 16 women accused David Copperfield of sexual misconduct
So far in the investigation, 16 women have alleged that the renowned magician behaved inappropriately with them over several decades. One of these survivors is Brittney Lewis, who had come out with her accusations in 2018, stating that Copperfield had sexually assaulted her about 30 years ago. The 67-year-old magician denied the claim.
2. Some of the survivors were reportedly even below 18 years old at the time.
Several women told the Guardian that they were underage when Copperfield misbehaved with them. One of the survivors, who wanted to be anonymous, recalled that she was 15 years old when she met him after one of his shows, following which he called her late at night and sent her gifts.
When the aforementioned survivor turned 18, they had consensual sex and were in a relationship for about four years. She revealed to the Guardian that she felt she had been 'groomed' by him for all those years. Copperfield "strongly denies any suggestion of grooming or any other impropriety," the report said.
3. Copperfield drugged some of the survivors
Brittney Lewis and two other survivors disclosed that they were drugged and sexually assaulted by David Copperfield. According to Lewis, the magician drugged her and her friend before assaulting them.
4. Copperfield was named in the Jeffrey Epstein list
In January 2024, Copperfield was one of the names included in the list of prominent figures associated with indicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. A survivor called Johanna Sjoberg, who was reportedly invited to Epstein's notorious property for sexual favours, said that Copperfield and many other celebrities were also present at the property during this ordeal.
5. Copperfield denies accusations
The Guardian reported that David Copperfield's lawyers have denied all the accusations. Copperfield's lawyers told the outlet he denied any wrongdoing and had "never acted inappropriately with anyone, let alone anyone underage." The defence lawyers added that no complaints had been made against him when the assaults were said to have taken place.
Concerning his name in the Epstein list, the publication reported, "Our client did not know about Epstein's horrific crimes. Like the rest of the world, he learned about it from the press." Although Copperfield was named in the list, there were no reported accusations against him from Epstein's survivors.
