Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Wu alleged that she faced sexual harassment and intimidation from a producer on the set of Fresh Off The Boat.
The 40-year-old actor spoke about the sexual harassment she faced in conversation with The Atlantic. Wu was promoting her memoir Making a Scene when she revealed that she faced “sexual harassment and intimidation” on the set of Fresh Off The Boat by one of the producers.
The actor said that while she was uncomfortable with the situation, she did not come forward with the story to protect the show and its impact on the Asian American community. Wu was hesitant to write about that chapter of her life in her book, but decided to it was important to talk about.
She ">said, “I did have a pretty traumatic experience my first couple years on that show, and nobody knew about it because that show was historic for Asian Americans.”
Constance Wu Alleges Sexual Harassment
According to Variety, Wu alleged in the advance copy of her book that the producer coerced her into attending a Lakers game with her, during which he touched her thigh and grazed her crotch until she told him to stop.
Wu spoke about how Fresh Off The Boat was the only show on network television in over 20 years to star Asian Americans. She said, “I did not want to sully the reputation of the one show we had representing us”. Wu added that she kept quiet about the sexual harassment and intimidation she endured during the show's first two seasons.
After the show became a success on the broadcast television network ABC, Wu was no longer scared of losing her job and was able to say “no” to the harassment and intimidation.
Constance Wu also referenced her 2019 tweet, where she expressed her disappointment regarding the show’s renewal. The tweet led to mass criticism and Wu almost took her own life. Wu said her “reckless tweets” resulted in her receiving a lot of hate and abuse. She said, “I wanted to have a fresh slate where I didn’t have to start a show with all these memories of abuse”.
Wu said the aftermath of the tweet led to her taking a break from her career, going to therapy and ultimately coming out better due to it.
