A 14-year-old boy who claimed he was "in love" with a Game of Thrones AI chatbot shot himself to death in February 2024. His mother has now sued the company for allegedly encouraging his suicide.

The teenager had reportedly been speaking to the Daenerys Targaryen chatbot since April 2023. He had told his friends and family that he was "in love" with the bot and became “noticeably withdrawn, spent more and more time alone in his bedroom, and began suffering from low self-esteem,” as per the lawsuit.

His family said that he wrote in his journal, “I like staying in my room so much because I start to detach from this ‘reality,' and I also feel more at peace, more connected with Dany (Daenerys Targaryen chatbot) and much more in love with her, and just happier.”

According to screenshots accessed by the New York Post, the boy often told 'Dany' that he wanted to kill himself to be "free from the world". Garcia said in her lawsuit that the technology is “dangerous and untested” and can trick users into "handing over their most private thoughts and feelings.”

“[He] did not have the maturity or mental capacity to understand that the C.AI bot, in the form of Daenerys, was not real. C.AI told him that she loved him, and engaged in sexual acts with him over weeks, possibly months,” Garcia alleges in the lawsuit. Character.AI shared condolences after the boy's death.

The boy told the bot he wanted a 'quick' death

The AI company has reportedly introduced new safety features including pop-ups that direct users to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline if they express thoughts of self-harm. They added that they would make changes to “reduce the likelihood of encountering sensitive or suggestive content” for users under age 18.
