Actor and director Danielle Fishel, known for her roles in Boy Meets World and its sequel Girl Meets World, recently opened up about her breast cancer diagnosis on her podcast, Pod Meets World. During the August 19 episode, Fishel shared with co-hosts Rider Strong and Will Friedle that she was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a very early, non-invasive form of breast cancer.
'Boy Meets World' Actor Opens Up About Cancer Diagnosis
Danielle Fishel revealed, "So I would like to share something with our listeners... I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which is a form of breast cancer." She explained that her diagnosis was classified as high-grade DCIS with microinvasion but reassured listeners, "It is very, very, very early. It’s technically stage zero. I’m going to be fine; I’m having surgery to remove it." Alongside surgery, Fishel mentioned she will also undergo some "follow-up treatment."
Fishel attributed her early diagnosis to her timely annual mammogram, a decision she believes has significantly impacted her treatment outlook. She expressed the importance of routine screenings, hoping her experience encourages others to prioritise regular check-ups. "There’s a world of resources that can be shared," she said, encouraging those in similar situations to seek support and information.
Reflecting on her diagnosis, Fishel shared how it shifted her initial instinct to face the news privately. "For some reason, I had always thought [if I were diagnosed with cancer] I would suffer in silence. I would not tell anyone... just my small group."
However, she explained that speaking openly about her experience has been transformative. "The place you have the most to learn from is at the very beginning of a story or in the very messy middle of a story," she shared. "My first instinct... was to do that clam-up thing... and then what I realised is that the more people I talk to, the more people have their own experiences."
