Michelle Obama, the former First Lady, also addressed the convention, describing the atmosphere as filled with "the contagious power of hope." She expressed her support for Harris, whom she referred to as "my girl," and suggested that hope—a key theme in Barack Obama's 2008 campaign—is making a strong comeback.

The convention's mood was already cheerful after President Joe Biden's emotional speech on August 19, where he formally ended his reelection bid. Biden's endorsement of Harris as his successor marked a symbolic passing of the torch, reflecting a shift in the Democratic Party's leadership.

Doug Emhoff, Harris's husband, also spoke at the convention, highlighting her readiness for the presidency. He praised her blend of "joy and toughness" and affirmed that she is "exactly the right president" for this moment in history.

Harris’s Central Role in the Campaign

As the Democratic Party united behind Harris, they are confident in their ability to defeat Trump. Trump has been focussing on attacking Harris's policies, particularly her stance on law enforcement. Speaking  in Howell, Michigan, he criticised Harris as part of what he called a "Kamala crime wave," making unfounded claims about increased violence.

Amidst these attacks, Harris remains a central figure in the Democratic campaign. The party’s enthusiasm for her candidacy mirrors the excitement of Barack Obama's 2008 campaign, which was marked by high levels of public enthusiasm.

In addition to the support from Obama and Michelle Obama, the convention saw speeches from other key figures. Hillary Clinton, the first female presidential nominee of a major party, also praised Harris. Clinton noted that Harris will be the one to break "the highest, hardest glass ceiling" in American politics.

The first night of the Democratic National Convention drew 20 million viewers, surpassing the 18.1 million who watched the opening of the Republican convention. This strong viewership reflects the high level of interest and support for Harris and her candidacy.

As the Democratic Party prepares for the upcoming election, the focus remains on rallying behind Kamala Harris and ensuring that her campaign resonates with voters across the country.
