'Shut up!': Anne Hathaway AKA Mia Returns As Princess Diaries 3 Gets Green Light

The much-loved Princess Diaries franchise is set to return with its third instalment, as announced on October 4. The movie series, based on Meg Cabot's young adult novel, stars Anne Hathaway as the lead character, Princess Mia. The actor has officially confirmed that she will once again take on the role of Mia Thermopolis, much to the excitement of fans worldwide.

Anne Hathaway, who became a household name through her portrayal of Princess Mia, will not only reprise her role but also take on a producer’s role in The Princess Diaries 3. Hathaway will be producing the movie under her Somewhere Pictures banner, while Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two films, will also return as a producer. 

In a social media post shared late October 5 night, Hathaway confirmed the news with a fun selfie video, alongside memorable clips from the first two parts of The Princess Diaries. The highlight of the post was when Hathaway recited the iconic line from the original film: “Shut up!"—a moment fans instantly recognised and loved.

Though the movie is now officially greenlit, the third instalment has been in development for quite some time. Last year, Hathaway gave an update in an interview with V Magazine, saying, "We’re in a good place. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place." Now, the production seems to have advanced even further, signalling that the much-anticipated sequel is closer to reality than ever.

A fresh perspective will be brought to The Princess Diaries 3 as Crazy Rich Asians director Adele Lim has signed on to helm the project. Known for her vibrant direction, Lim is expected to bring new energy to the beloved franchise. 

All about The Princess Diaries 

The Princess Diaries series revolves around Mia Thermopolis, a regular teenager who discovers that her estranged father is the king of the fictional kingdom of Genovia. Throughout the series, Mia’s life takes a drastic turn as she must transition from her ordinary city life to that of royalty, under the guidance of her grandmother, played by Julie Andrews in the earlier films.

While there are no specific plot details for the third instalment yet, fans can expect the continuation of Mia's journey as a princess, mixed with humour, heartwarming moments, and royal challenges.
