United States Vice President Kamala Harris reportedly secured the support of Democratic delegates on July 22 to become the party's top choice for contesting the Presidential election in November 2024. This monumental achievement has resonated deeply with women, as the Indo-American leader stands poised to create history as the country's first woman President, and the first woman of colour at that. From common folk to celebrities, here is how women have reacted to Harris' candidacy.
Donations For Kamala Harris' Campaign
As incumbent President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the reelection bid to endorse Harris on July 21, a large number of women supporters raised donations for the Vice President's candidacy. According to a report in Fortune, a group of women donated $1.5 Million within three hours of launching her campaign.
The outlet wrote that 44,000 Black women and allies from the organisation Win With Black Women got on a Zoom call to raise funds and discuss ways to support Harris. The group is a network of women of colour in leadership across various sectors from business to politics and education/academia to religion.
Women Support Harris' Candidacy
Kamala Harris' candidacy has garnered widespread acclaim from American women. Speaking to a Boston-based WCVB news, a voter named Erica Mattison, noted, "It's important to look not just at somebody's gender but at their overall lived experiences, their qualifications, their policy agenda, their leadership capabilities."
Meanwhile, Lora Pellegrini, chair of the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus, told the outlet, "Women are educated to the same extent as men, but yet we still see a disproportionate number of men in politics and government, and I think when women are at the table, how they prioritize issues is different."
Several celebrities too have taken to social media sharing their support for the Democratic politician's presidential bid. On June 22, Harris' campaign official account on X (formerly Twitter) rebranded itself to reference English musician Charli XCX's latest trending album 'brat'. This propelled great response from Gen Z voters.
Many Hollywood big shots like actor Barbara Streisand wrote a data-backed message on X, stating why she believes Harris would be the right fit to stump Republican candidate and former US President Donald Trump. Viola Davis, Cardi B and Ariana Grande have also shared their support on social media.
I love Joe Biden, and all the wonderful things he’s done for our country. Trump is a pathological liar who lies as easily as he breathes. He wants to take away women’s rights and destroy our great democracy. Kamala Harris will continue Joe Biden’s work and will be a great…

Taylor Swift's fandom, Swifties, is endorsing Harris' campaign, launching separate social media accounts called Swifties For Harris which grabbed over 20,000 followers overnight. While the musician herself has not said anything about Harris' candidacy this year, she openly showed support for the Biden-Harris campaign in 2020.
While the United States of America grapples with issues like lack of reproductive rights, racism, and gun violence, women of colour in leadership could serve as a pivotal force for change. Kamala Harris' potential presidency is seen as a beacon of hope for addressing these critical issues with understanding and determination.
