Cochin International Airport welcomed Eva, a one-year-old cat, as the first pet to fly into the facility from abroad. This was made possible after the airport secured the prestigious Animal Quarantine and Certification Services (AQCS) certification. It is now one of the only seven airports in India authorized to receive pets from international destinations.

A Wholesome Journey: From Doha to Kerala

Eva’s journey began in Doha, where her owner, K.A. Ramachandran, decided to bring her along as he returned to Kerala after 34 years in Qatar, as reported by The Indian Express. Eva’s trip became a one-of-a-kind occasion for the airport, which has been operational for 25 years. Her arrival was received with excitement among staff and passengers!

Eva’s Backstory: From Abandonment to Family Member

Ramachandran, an automobile mechanic by profession, recounted Eva’s touching story. The cat was discovered abandoned near his apartment in Doha a year ago. Taking her in, he nurtured her, and she quickly became a ‘paww-art’ of his family.

“She eats only cooked fish and chicken,” Ramachandran shared, adding that veterinary doctors believe Eva may belong to a Turkish breed.

When it came time to return to Kerala, leaving Eva behind was not an option. His son Rineesh, who remains in Doha, strongly encouraged him to ensure Eva accompanied him.

Safety Check List for International Pet Travel

Bringing a pet from abroad is no simple feat. Ramachandran described the detailed and tedious process, which included:

  • Veterinary Examination and Documentation: Eva underwent a thorough health check, receiving a pet passport with her details, including her age (marked as one year and three months).
  • Airline Application: Documents such as vaccination certificates, a health certificate, and Ramachandran’s flight details were submitted to Air India, the airline transporting Eva.
  • No-Objection Certificate: A critical step involved obtaining clearance from the Animal Quarantine and Certification Services under the Union Ministry of Animal Husbandry.

All documents had to be issued within seven days of travel to ensure validity.

Cost and Logistics

Although Eva did not require a separate ticket, Ramachandran paid 340 Qatari Riyals for her transportation. The cost is calculated by combining the weight of the pet (3 kg) and its carrier (2 kg).

A Warm Welcome in Kerala

Eva’s arrival at Cochin International Airport was met with excitement. Customs clearance and other formalities were hassle-free, making the occasion even more special.

“I never imagined that bringing my cat would create history,” Ramachandran said, reflecting on the overwhelming response to Eva’s arrival.
