Three powerful political faces in India called for a stronger effort towards women's equality in India. Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Niti Ayog CEO Amitabh Kant and Parliamentarian Sachin Pilot all called for economic empowerment, strengthening of women's position in public life and a greater role in decision making.
Three Powerful Men Stand For Greater Role Of Women In Public Life
Speaking to Poorvi Gupta at SheThePeople.TV, Amitabh Kant said if we don't have conscious gender parity, "India can never grow at higher rates. Women have a very critical and significant role to play."

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram said the numbers and statistics of ownership and decision making were against women currently and that needed to change. "They should break free from custom, shackles and tradition and begin to think of their own. They should enter public spaces for work and leisure." He added it was high time women added much more to their own economic development and break free from having to depend on men for money. "To become independent economically can be very liberating. Women today own one per cent of all the property in India and about 10 per cent of all the income in India which is what keeps them at the mercy of men. Once women acquire income, they will become free."

Parliamentarian Sachin Pilot said he spends a lot of time with women in rural India especially in his constituency in Rajasthan. He insisted on the need to have more women role models beyond the ten we see in magazines day in and day out. "We must not limit the empowerment of women to the few we see in politics or sport or film. Empowerment should be more inclusive where they have a higher decision making in households."
