She was India's first female judge in the Supreme Court of India. Fatima Beevi began her career in the lower judiciary in Kerala and later rose through the ranks to become a judge in the high court before being appointed to the apex court in 1989. For her community the rise of a Muslim female lawyer was inspirational and a powerful signal of success. Fatima Beevi also served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu which turned out to be a controversial tenure as the state went through transition from one party led by Karunanidhi to another led by Jayalalitha putting the spotlight on Beevi's comments and decisions as the governor.
