Being the daughter of a film star who is considered no less than a god by some people can be a surreal experience, and director Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth is very open about being grateful for most of it...But she also reveals something about losing out on "normal" childhood, in her memoir Standing on an Apple Box. Beyond being a celebrity child, Aishwaryaa has also been married to superstar Dhanush since her early twenties.

Aishwarya herself is a trained classical dancer, and she started her career as a director in 2012 when she made her first film with her husband Dhanush as the lead actor. The song “Why This Kolaveri Di” that went viral is from the same movie. Her second film as a filmmaker was Vai Raja Vai, which opened to decent collection at the box-office from the audience.

Earlier in an interview with SheThePeople.TV, Aishwarya talked about women and their empowerment. She also spoke on feminism and said that it is not a bad word. “The movement is not about hating men or fighting against them. It is just about saying that we are equals.”

She added, “We should never start with saying that we are not equals because that puts us two steps behind. We need to spread awareness about the fact that we are already equals. We do have equal rights, it’s just that we need to first know it ourselves.”

In August, Aishwaryaa was also chosen by the UN Women India to be its Goodwill Ambassador. Aishwaryaa is anyway known for her philanthropic work for the under-privileged.

Aishwarya is a mother of two young boys, Yatra and Ling and she talked to us about how she raised them as feminists.

“I tell them too that it (feminism) is not a bad word. It is about respecting women. It is about knowing that each woman in your life whether it is your staff, your mother or your course mate, they all deserve respect. And only then will you be good husbands or fathers-in law tomorrow,” articulated the 31-year-old director.

Actor Dhanush announced his split with Aishwarya on January 17 on in a Twitter post. He wrote, "Eighteen years of togetherness as friends, couple, as parents and well-wishers to each other. The journey has been of growth, understanding, adjusting and adapting. Today we stand at a place where our paths separate. Aishwaryaa and I have decided to part ways as a couple and take time to understand us as individuals for the better." Aishwarya also posted the joint statement on her social media handle.

Fans started sharing an post by Aishwarya in which she had called herself a proud wife of Dhanush. The post is from three months ago when her father Rajinikanth and husband Dhanush were given awards at the 67th National Film Awards.
