There are so many times that women wish they weren't born a girl. They are often refused to do things simply because they are women. Each woman has had this thought at least once in her lifetime so that she could have more control over her life with fewer restrictions and conditions over whatever they do. Women of the internet reveal why they wish they weren't born a girl:
Being a woman in a male-dominated world isn't easy. You have been constantly subjected to the misogyny and chauvinism which only perceives women as a weaker gender, not to forget, the inevitable male gaze which keeps following everywhere. Not only this but living in a male-dominated society has also set certain expectations for women including being an "ideal" woman who is sensitive, hardly ever talks back and is selfless even after putting herself on the line again and again.
When a woman differs to obey societal expectations, she is simply considered "ill-mannered" and "evil". Due to such double standards of society, women, most of the time, feel they would have a much better life if they weren't born a girl and would have been a man instead.
In a Reddit thread, women revealed why they wish they weren't born a girl. A woman wrote how period cramps are the worst and she would have been much better without them. She also mentioned how she wished she weren't born a girl whenever she hears about "abortion rights being revoked" simply because it is the violation of a woman's right to choose and their rights over their own body.
Another woman wrote why she wishes to be a man saying, "Anytime when I am reminded that it would make me safer to not be a woman and because of it I have to specifically adapt my plans and behavior to account for the vulnerability I have as a woman." As saddening it may sound, it is only true that there are so many times women have to "adjust" themselves sitting, talking and even laughing so that she is not judged as someone inappropriate while a man can freely pee in public and nobody bats an eye.
A woman with username Xpinkrainbowx wrote, "Any situation that has to do with women being sexually harassed and objectified unprovoked," makes her wish she wasn't born a girl. Another wrote wrote "The fact that I’m considered less hirable because I have kids." Another woman agreed upon the latter's reason sharing her experience in an interview where the employer asked her, "what about starting a family? What does (boyfriend) think about this." She further mentioned that she told him it was for her and she didn't care what her boyfriends thinks of it. It is so typical that women are considered as less efficient employees because they are considered to be more "family-oriented" despite so many female icons continually achieving success in various fields.
Another Reddit woman remarked how she doesn't wish she weren't born a girl simply because it wouldn't have changed how women are treated. She wrote, "No situation has ever made me wish I weren't a woman. However, many situations have made me wish I was seen as an equal while being a woman. If I were a man, women would still be treated horribly. I want the change to come from the world, not from myself."
Molestation, rape, murders, domestic violence, periods, sexism, child birth. There are so many things women face on in their lives and are mostly convinced that the world is surely better for men as compared to women. Yet there are so many things to embrace as a woman even in a world dominated by men.
Women are reaching new heights, breaking barriers and emerging stronger than ever in this world of men only to be considered as equals and provided new opportunities for women just like them without having to face the same struggles as them. Being a woman is beautiful, after all, if we have the power to bring a life into this world, we surely have the power to bring a change into this world as well. We are fearless have often fought for our rights when they need has arisen. We might not be treated as fairly as want but we will not back down and eventually achieve gender equality.
Being a woman has its drawbacks, of course, but it is also our strength. We see things differently than men, we feel and express more, we are known to be better leaders and we have no doubt managed to grab opportunities even after many hurdles. Dear women, you are strong and you deserve every good thing in the world.
