Vijay Deverakonda had recently shared a snippet of the song Aafat, from his upcoming movie Liger, on social media. However, the actor's caption on the post which reduces women to being drama queens and homewreckers has raised many eyebrows.
On August 6, the song "Aafat" from Liger was released. The song features the main leads of the film-Ananya Panday and Vijay Deverakonda. Prior to its release, Deverakonda had shared a teaser of the song from his Instagram handle with the caption, "There's always a beautiful drama Queen who will come between a mother and son!" Such problematic words, coming from a top star, makes us wonder if influential personalities in the country think their social media posts through before posting them or not?
Deverakonda's post was shared on other social media platforms like Twitter where it deserved the flak that it deserved. "Y’all are allowing such captions in 2022????" wrote one user. Another user wrote, "This guy is actually so problematic he keeps defending his arjun reddy and yet Bollywood keeps pushing him on everyone". Yet another user pointed out, "It all began with Arjun Reddy/Kabir Singh. High time that we stop glorifying such thinking.".
This isn't the first time the actor has found himself in hot waters for his problematic comments on women. During his recent appearance on the talk show Koffee With Karan, he tried to justify the toxic behaviour of his titular character in the film Arjun Reddy. Do actors ever pause to think about the kind of impact their statements have on young minds who are not mature enough to separate right behaviour from wrong?
A public figure should be careful of what he says, but Deverakonda does not seem to be bothered by the level of sexism his posts or comments during interviews seem to peddle.

Vijay Deverakonda comment on women: When will this stereotyping stop?
The long lived 'rivalry' between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law has been portrayed as a headache for the man as he is shown to be the one who is suffering to bring them to terms with each other. But are men really the victims that they claim to be? Why can't men communicate better with the women in their lives and set boundaries for each one of them? Do they not enjoy their moms and wives competing for their attention, or to pamper them?
Besides, this narrative about bickering sass-bahu is a pretty outdated. Not all mothers-in-law resent their son's wife. Similarly, not all daughters-in-law contest with their husband's mother to get his attention. In many homes, the saas and bahu know their boundaries and actually become allies rather than each other's rivals.
Another stereotype that Deverakonda's caption perpetuates is that of women being drama queens who constantly demand attention and keep men on their toes. As if women do not have anything better to do with their lives.
No woman is a drama queen, no woman is a home wrecker who is trying to separate a man from his family. We want women to give up their lifestyle for the men they marry, but we never question why husbands and in-laws expect women to do so, instead of meeting them the halfway? Shouldn't families collectively come up with a common ground so that the burden of adjustment doesn't fall solely on women?
To Vijay Deverakonda and many other celebrities who don't think twice while promoting sexism and misogyny on social media is okay, it is important that you look at how your words can be interpreted. We live in times when breaking long-held stereotypes about women and men need to be shattered so that they can finally have more agency on their lives. Our stars can help expediate this process, if only they can dare to refrain from massy statements that might be applauded but set the wrong precedent.
