Indian web series director and founder of the youth’s most beloved The Viral Fever (TVF), Arunabh Kumar, together with Abhishek Srivastava and Swarandeep Biswas presented before “series-buffs,” a heartwarming Saas Bahu Achar Pvt. Ltd. Set against the milieu of Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi, the 6-episode web series premiered on ZEE5 on July 8, starring National Award-winning actor Amruta Subhash as the story’s protagonist, Suman.
Suman, a small townswoman homemaker aspires to attain financial empowerment, intending to win the hearts of her daughter Juhi and son, Rishi from her ex-spouse, Dilip. Anup Soni assumes the role of an irresponsible Dilip, a partner to whom the marital separation with Suman was hinged around budi halaat (unfavourable circumstances). Dilip expresses that he wanted to marry Manisha (Anjana Sukhani), without holding himself accountable for abandoning Suman and holding tight the custody of the two children from her.
Saas Bahu Achaar Review
The friendship between Juhi and Rishi’s stepmother and Dilip’s present wife, Manisha and ex-wife Suman is endearing. But, one cannot skip the part in the first episode of the series in which Dilip slapped Suman’s face during a confrontation. Enraged and determined to prove every person wrong, Suman, with no privilege of receiving formal education from the four walls of a classroom, tries to kickstart her entrepreneurial journey anchored in her culinary skills. She starts selling pickles.
The journey, however, was inundated with obstacles and hardships but as illustrated in the trailer itself, Suman finds her true calling in the world of business with the unconditional support from her mother-in-law (Yamini Das). In fact, she found it peculiar and strange not to identify her loving mother-in-law as her own mother.
When Suman’s vicinity and almost the entire city of Delhi became in awe of her achaar-making, will she really unite with her two kids even after the financial independence she earned - the blood, sweat and tears she has been shedding all throughout, caught in the throes of an unhappy marriage and tragic sacrifices?
To quote the creators, “This show is a tribute to all the women who found their professional calling despite all odds. A woman is a true warrior who battles all the hardships that reveal her highest potential giving her a new dimension."
The series might have its flaws too in which one can say that the plot and ending were predictable and generic, but Amruta Subhash’s acting conceals all of it. She said, "Saas Bahu Achaar is a special project because Suman's character is unlike anything I have played before.” Indeed, the character of Suman is a force to be reckoned with. She hardly feels defeated when her life is as blue as a tragedy. Her story serves as an inspiration to every woman who wants to pursue her professional calling but the confinements of domesticity led them to give up on their dreams. Amruta adds, “It is truly a show with its heart in the right place and I am ecstatic that I got to play such a strong female-led show.”
Deeming the saas-bahu relationship to be the most special and attractive aspect of the show, Yamini Das commented, “The most attractive thing about the show for me was the saas-bahu relationship,” adding, “Not often do you see such a positive equation between a saas and a bahu in Indian shows but in Saas Bahu Achaar, Suman's biggest strength is her mother-in-law, which is so refreshing and inspiring. The show ticked all the boxes for me in terms of the inspiring storyline, the unique character, the much-needed messaging, etc and I am glad that I got to be a part of it."
