Women can either have a career or a pregnancy! Pregnancy has the potential to ruin women's careers, With pregnancy women's freedom gets a dead end and more. These are typical statements we get to hear tons of the time from society. Working mothers ambitious about their careers are preached work-life balance and parenting. Women prioritising their personal life, family, and children are asked to be a little ambitious and have an identity. Can't we leave it to the person, what she wants to have? Be it career, family, or a mix of both.
Mahesh Bhatt On Moushumi Chatterjee Pregnancy
Even actors have been preached by male directors and actors when it came to career and pregnancy. There has been a time when actors getting married or pregnant was seen as the death of their career. Male directors or producers had a say in how actors should maintain their image. Recently, veteran actor Moushumi Chatterjee in an interview with Lehren opened up about her film career and choosing her personal life over her professional life. Chatterjee recalled how Mahesh Bhatt once said that whenever a career goes up, you become pregnant. He called the pregnancy one of the obstacles in Chatterjee's career. That is when Chatterjee corrected and said that they added colors to life. Chatterjee also revealed that she never felt pressured because of her pregnancy. Why was it difficult for people around her to realise that are her priorities and choices?
Given the present time, several women avoid pregnancy to boost their careers. There are also women who find satisfaction in having children and family. But nowadays, these women are also looked down upon. In fact, homemakers are not considered empowered. When a woman chooses family, Why do we assume they are unambitious, submissive, and wasting life? Why can’t women who “choose” to have a baby be empowered? Because choosing means they are claiming their autonomy, that is what equality is all about.
Chatterjee choosing baby is claiming her autonomy and at the same feeling empowered with her choices. It is not that she was not keen on her career, even if she did not give her 100% to be an actor, she did give a few best performances of her lifetime. In fact, it was the system or society that failed her to easily have it all. 'Women can not have it all', is something society induces in us. Chatterjee opted for what made her happier. So men don't get to tell women that their pregnancy is a roadblock to their careers. It is society's mind that they can't accommodate the comeback of women. At the same time, balancing career and children is not a cakewalk, can't expect women to be superwomen. So, dear society stop there, don't preach to women about their choices! Let women prioritise their life, let them choose what makes them happy.
