The one thing that a Bengali does not mind you doing is picking a rosogulla before your main meal or even starters. The excitement increases as the winter wedding season begins and the invites start coming. The cool breeze and fish cutlet with Old Monk, drooling right?
The Bengali's love their fish and mutton but did you know that they also loved potol (pointed gourd)? Here are five delicacies at a Bengali wedding that you need to pile on your plate:
- Two kinds of fish, because who is satisfied with one? You begin with fish fry and during the main course keep a lookout for fish curry and Bhetki Macher Paturi, which is a white fish fillet or shrimp or Hilsa cooked by wrapping in Banana leaf. Now, non-Bengalis do have this stereotype that Bengalis cannot live without fish, yes but the delicacies made by fish are compulsory because it is considered lucky.
- After starting with fish fry, the next delicacy to look out for is Radhaballavi which is stuffed puri with mixed vegetables, dal and aludum. If it is a winter wedding, then it is Koraishutir Kochuri which is puri stuffed with green peas. After this mutton and fish curry enter the picture.
- Mutton is compulsory: Have you heard of weddings getting cancelled because there was no mutton served, yes it did happen. A man broke up his wedding because no mutton curry was served to the man's family. On top of that, he married someone else while returning home. The dish one needs to look for in a Bengali wedding is Mutton Kosha.
- If vegetables are your acquired taste, then go for niramish (without garlic and onion) potol er dolma which is pointed gourd with masala stuffings. In case that is missing, then go for Dhokar (betrayal) Dalna which is a lentil cake prepared with spices, coconut and peanuts.
- Coming to dessert, no one will judge you a bit if you decide to take rosogulla first, so go for it. If there is mishti doi at the wedding, do not look anywhere else.
