Bollywood Celebrity Weddings: Why Are We So Hooked?

So, we have to brace up for another celebrity wedding frenzy. Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt have reportedly set a date for their wedding. I ask so what? Two people who are seemingly in love are to marry so what’s it to do with us?

Like this couple a few months ago the masses, fans, paparazzi all went crazy over Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal wedding. We got every minute detail of their various wedding ceremonies whether we like it or not. Similarly, I remember every detail of Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma wedding, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone wedding, Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja wedding, Sagarika Ghatge and Zaheer Khan wedding, Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha wedding, Mouni Roy and Suraj Nambiar wedding as they were showcased like never before. I have been pondering on what gets us hooked to celebrity weddings? Here’s what I consider are some plausible reasons as to why we absorb every bit of information about such weddings.

Bollywood Celebrity Weddings: The ultimate weddings

Indians love weddings, period! Our lives are devoted to finding a match for every eligible person in our families and neighbourhood. So whenever there is an announcement of a celebrity couple tying the knot it immediately catches our imagination. Remember the secret and unknown destination of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli wedding, which was not so secret soon after. Everyone was swooning over her bridal look and the destination. It seemed dreamlike! Yes, celebrity weddings are dream weddings which we mortal people can only aspire and dream of. Celebrities can do what and how they want as they can afford it. So, we want to see what new they could think off and afford.

Social media - the connectors

Earlier film magazines would report celebrity weddings with a couple of pictures. Now due to social media accounts that celebrities have, their fans get to know them up close and personal. Celebrities also tend to share important milestones with their fans thus making them a part of their lives. And if the one they adore is all set to tie the knot, fans feel they are invited to the wedding and want to know everything that’s happening. Fans feel they are included in exclusive events. The paparazzi and advertisers know that and serve them exactly that.

Trend setters

Celebrity brides or grooms are trend setters. Whether it’s their clothing, jewellery, wedding venues every celebrity wishes to outdo each other. And fashion designers and wedding planners go all out and indulge and customize their client’s demands. So, long after Deepika Padukone got married her red bridal wear with a Sanskrit quote 'Sada Saubhagyavati Bhava' written in gold embroidered on her odhni was in demand so was Anushka Sharma’s pastel lehenga set and Priyanka Chopra’s red lehenga with Nick's name (Nicholas, written in Hindi) was made a part of the embroidery or the fact that her mother Madhu Chopra gave away the bride trended. As far as celebrity grooms go the colour and cuts of their sherwanis and suits is what gets noticed. The Sabyasachi Mukherjee show ‘Band Baja Bride’ on a channel shows us how normal brides want the designer to recreate the bridal wear of a celebrity he has designed for. They want to live the dream too.

Masses basically get to know what’s in vogue and want to plan something similar for their own wedding or weddings in their families.

Celebrity weddings tend to make even the biggest pessimists amongst us believe in a fairytale type of love and romance, and that’s what keeps us hooked. In India cine stars come under the category of celebrities. After a while fans tend to forget the reel from the real. These actors show us an alternate ‘fairytale verse’ on the screen which some people forget that it’s a fabricated and imaginary one. And these stars’ daily life is under scrutiny too and common people consider them to live the ultimate lives, what with them wearing designer clothes, partying, zipping around the world. So, when two stars decide to get hitched, it’s a fairytale wedding right, which is full of love and romance? The lives and wedding that a common person aspires for is out there for everyone to see. Even if the celebs themselves are not keen on showing their private lives the market forces them too. Some celeb couples like Priyanka and Nick even decided to sell their wedding rights.

As long as celebrities keep getting married, sharing their special day on their social media handles, and selling their wedding photos to magazines, we’re still going to continue to consume them in all of their lavish glory, and believe that someday we too could afford to have a wedding destination in Italy like Anushka and Virat.
