Nirbhaya's mother, Asha Devi denied speculations of her joining the Congress party. In fact, no one approached Asha Devi for the same. She also stated that she has no connection with politics. Rumours were that Asha Devi will contest against Arvind Kejriwal in the upcoming Delhi Elections on a Congress ticket. The upcoming Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled to be held on February 8, 2020. The counting of votes will continue till February 11, 2020.

Asha Devi said “I have no interest in such things. I was fighting to get justice for my daughter and the daughters of the country. I want the execution of the four convicts.” Nirbhaya's father Badrinath also denied the speculations and clarified that their family has no interest in joining politics.

Rumours of Asha Devi joining  the Congress Party started when sportsperson turned politician, Kirti Azad retweeted a tweet which made claims that Asha Devi will contest against Arvind Kejriwal in the upcoming Delhi Assembly Elections. Kirti's tweeted “Salute to the mother. Welcome, Asha Devi.”

Earlier on January 17, 2020, President Ram Nath Kovind rejected mercy plea of Mukesh Singh, one of the convicts. Delhi government also recommended the rejection of the petition for mercy. The decision has now been forwarded to Union Home ministry. The scheduled execution of the convicts was to be held on January 22. As per the law, the execution of convicts can only take place after the mercy plea is rejected, that to 14 days after the rejection.

Six people were convicted in this case-Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Kumar Singh, Ram Singh and one juvenile person. From the six convicts, in 2016 the juvenile person walked free after spending three years at correction home. Also, Ram Singh committed suicide in 2013 inside Tihar jail. The case led to structural and judicial changes in the country.
