A Beautician to Deputy Mayor : How Mothe Srilatha Won Elections in Greater Hyderabad

It's a remarkable story. From an an at-home beautifican to getting elected as the Deputy Mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Mothe Srilatha, with no political background, won an election with grit and determination and hardwork in the city. With Mothe Srilath as Deputy Mayor and Gadwal Vijaya Laxmi as Major of Greater Hyderabad, it is women power all the way.

Mothe Srilatha's journey from beautician to Deputy Mayor

49-year-old Mothe Srilatha was a self-employed beautician before contesting the election in December 2020. She participated in the election as a TRS corporator from Tarnaka ward. Srilatha won the seat as the corporator and adding a feather to the cap, she got elected as the Deputy Mayor in GHMC. She was opposite BJP nominated Shanker Yadav. However, AIMIM voted for the TRS candidate, Srilatha and brought her into power.

On being elected, Srilatha was extremely happy and said, "I am thankful to Chief Minister KCR, KTR and my MLA for choosing me. I have been working since the beginning and because of this, I have been chosen today. I am really happy." KCR or K. Chandrashekhar Rao is the Chief Minister of Telangana while KTR or K.T. Rama Rao is the Working President of TRS.

More about her personal life

Srilata finished her schooling from the Railway Girls’ High School of North Lalaguda in Hyderabad. She is married to the political leader Shoban Reddy. He also contested the GHMC election as a corporator but didn’t get the seat. Earlier, he was a known student leader and labour leader with loyal commitment towards TRS.

Who is Vijaya R. Gadwal?

56-year-old Vijayalaxmi R. Gadwal, the newly elected Mayor in GHMC, is known for her strong political lineage and her significant qualifications. She graduated in Arts, Journalism and LLB. Gadwal won the GHMC election twice, one in 2016 and the other recently in December 2020.  She contested for the Mayor's seat opposite BJP nominated Veeranagari Radha. Gadwal is married to Bobby Reddy and has stayed in USA for 18 years. However, she returned to India to support her father in politics.
