A Celebration of Culture and Tradition
Beyond its breathtaking tourist destinations, Thailand boasts a rich cultural heritage, with festivals beautifully blending traditional rituals and vibrant celebrations. Here are some of the most popular festivals in Thailand:
Songkran Festival
Celebrated on April 13th every year, this festival marks the beginning of the harvest or spring season. Its origins are deeply rooted in Indian mythology. According to legend, Indra Deva, the king of devas, looked down from heaven and was disheartened by the corruption, deceit, and disrespect toward elders that plagued the city. The people's disregard for Dhamma (righteousness) led him to curse the city, resulting in a loss of glory, severe droughts, scorching heat, and scarcity of food and water, with homes overflowing with garbage.
In their despair, the people prayed to Mother Siri (Earth), who guided them to restore their faith in Dhamma. Following her advice, they practiced righteousness and gratitude, which brought renewal and prosperity to their land. Since then, this festival has been celebrated annually to express gratitude towards everyone, restore balance, show love and compassion towards elders, and honour the practice of Dhamma.
Yi Peng Lantern Festival
November month has skies majestically filled with lanterns to show devotion to Buddha and worship the deities in the high heavens. This festival is one of the remarkable festivals attended by tourists all around the world. Yi Peng means “the second full moon” of Lunar's calendar month.
