A fictionalised biopic of sorts, Jogi describes the atrocities of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi. The project's star, singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh, takes us through a heart-pounding narrative in which he goes from being an ordinary student to a prime target because of various religious conspiracies.
It's interesting to note that the actor had previously dabbled with a like subject through the feature film Punjab 1984, however that one was primarily set in the events' aftermath. You can watch the trailer of the film ">here.
Jogi Cast
Udta Punjab fame Dosanjh portrays the title character, Jogi, a charming college student who looks out for and supports his large family. When riots break out in Delhi, they are forced to split up and become targets, putting an abrupt end to their pleasantries. He even goes against his religious beliefs by cutting his hair to look like those who are harming his people when devising a strategy to get his people to a safe haven in Punjab.
A low-ranking police officer named Rawinder Chautala, who has a relationship with Jogi's family, is accompanying him on the crusade. The devoted friend is portrayed by Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub,
devises a plan to beat up unknowing goons while escorting hundreds of Sikhs and using his connections as a police officer to assure their safe transit.
Another important character, Kaleem, rises to the occasion as the city of Delhi bursts into flames and leads Jogi's family through crowds of enraged men carrying torches. The trailer for Paresh Pahuja's part suggests that he sets some sort of decoy so the Sikhs seeking refuge in the nearby Gurdwara can board the trucks fearlessly.
The fourth name on the list is Kumud Mishra, who plays Tejpal, a corrupt politician who only acts out of emotion. He requests a count of Sikh names from the voter list after learning of Indira Gandhi's passing. By ordering a squad of masked hooligans to set fire to every home and piece of property that has a Punjabi nameplate attached to it, Tejpal appears to have started the riots.
Amyra Dastur plays Kammo, Jogi's love interest, while Hiten Tejwani plays Lali, a supporter of Jogi and the other Sikhs.
