The series follows the lives of the Dutton family members who seek to protect their ancestral ranch and land from outsiders.
Over the course of the show’s tenure on the air, fans have learned a great deal about the personal lives of each of the members, and Beth is no exception. In the show, makes have shown that Beth cannot bear children and it starts bothering her as Beth’s romantic relationship with Rip gets serious. She feels that Rip will resent her for not being able to have a child.

The third season episode titled ‘Cowboys and Dreamers’ shows how Beth was about fifteen years old when she became pregnant. Beth was hooking up with Rip at that time and it is implied that the baby was his. She wasn't very sure of how her father would react so she reaches out to her brother, Jamie, for help. Jamie took her to a fertility clinic on the Broken Rock Reservation.

Beth was there at the clinic to fulfill the abortion formalities. That's when Jamie found out that the process for abortion would involve sterilization. As a result, Beth would become infertile. He was well aware of the risks of the procedure but Jamie decided not to tell Beth about it. As a result, Beth went through the abortion procedure and became infertile. She got very furious and started hating her brother after finding out the consequences of the abortion
It is then shown that Beth discloses the fact to Rip that she cannot have children. Rip assures her that it does not change his feelings for her. However, Beth doesn't disclose one thing. She hides the fact that the baby was Rip’s and Jamie’s involvement in the abortion. In the fourth season, Beth is seen getting close to an orphan named Carter. She tries to treat her like a son. There comes a point when his actions start hurting her but Rip reminds her that he is not their son. Beth feels that Rip will hate her for not being able to bear children one day.
The viewers are waiting to watch how Rip will react after finding out the whole truth. Jamie, on the other hand, has a child of his own and Beth is unaware of the same. Beth desperately wants to be a mother but is not sure how she will react to seeing the person who robbed her of the joy of a family of her own.
